]]> On Wednesday, I delivered a speech entitled “Gun Rights in 2022” at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL.

The event was hosted by FSU Young Americans for Liberty, FSU College Libertarians, and Leadership Institute. Their advisor, Sam Staley, director of the DeVoe Moore Center at FSU College of Social Sciences and Public Policy. The students are lucky to have the Gus A. Stavros Center for the Advancement of Free Enterprise and Economic Education.

The mission of the Stavros Center is to further free enterprise and economic education in the schools and the broader community. The Center develops and disseminates innovative ideas and materials that will help make economics more interesting and understandable. It seeks to help instructors at all levels become great teachers of economics.

Established in 1988, the Center is part of the Department of Economics, which is located within the College of Social Sciences. Faculty members associated with the Center are involved in at least one of the two major programs within the Center.

]]> My second op-ed submission for Young Voices is out in Washington Examiner today—the first time I’ve been published there. It’s on the implications of a new bill from Senator Dianne Feinstein.

Here’s an excerpt:

Debate surrounding Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 most often involves social media. But what about gun sales?

The question is worth asking because if Senate Democrats get their way, they’ll weaponize S230 reform to target online gun marketplaces. Conservatives urging repeal of Section 230 are playing right into their hands.

Section 230 enumerates in its “civil liability” clause that providers or users of an “interactive computer service” aren’t liable for third-party content posted there. Just as Facebook and Twitter aren’t liable for their users’ slander or misinformation, sites such as Armslist.com (the gun owner’s Craigslist) aren’t liable for illegal gun sales.

That doesn’t sit well with Sen. Dianne Feinstein. She recently introduced The Accountability for Online Firearms Marketplaces Act. If passed, her bill would “clarify” Section 230 to strip online firearms marketplaces, specifically Armslist.com, of immunity protections. “It’s time to start holding accountable those who turn a blind eye to illegal gun sales on their platforms,” Feinstein said .https://d1abc92078fe409e9f79534537a6120c.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html

If sites such as Armslist.com really were helping criminals to get guns, Feinstein would have a point. But that argument is weak.

Fun fact: It’s my hometown paper! In high school, I had several letters-to-the-editors published here and was once interviewed for a scholarship I won in 2009.

Here’s an excerpt from my column:

The city of San Jose in California recently made history, but not for anything good. Gun-owning residents will soon be required to pay a premium price to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

Mayor Sam Liccardo, a gun control advocate, recently announced a new “innovative” ordinance in response to the tragic mass shooting that befell the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) rail yard in May.

The new law will mandate gun owners pay liability insurance and an annual fee for costs incurred by gun-related violence. And at what cost? The freedom to exercise their right to keep and bear arms legally without being burdened with arbitrary financial burdens.

California already has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, with 107 restrictive provisions in the books. Last year, there were over 2,220 homicides in the state — a 31% increase from 2019

Law-abiding gun owners shouldn’t be held criminally or civilly liable for crimes they don’t commit. Since these gun owners aren’t responsible for these acts of violence, how can they be responsible for the wrongdoing of others?

She claims her proposal will stop 80% of mass shootings. Preposterous… Not surprising.

Elizabeth Warren says she wants to jack up taxes on guns and ammunition in hopes that higher prices will mean fewer sales. Second Amendment advocate, writer, and podcaster Gabriella Hoffman joins Cam in blasting the proposal. Cam also takes on CNN host S.E. Cupp’s assertion that it’s time to get emotional when it comes to gun control. Plus, a five-time felon uses a truck to attack police officers, and a South Carolina man defends his girlfriend and her kids from an angry ex who ignored a restraining order.

]]> Remember that time myself and 244 other Americans were featured in the “Guns in America” issue of TIME Magazine last fall? Well, it was just revealed the project has been nominated for an EMMY!

Here’s more from TIME: 

TIME has received a nomination for the 2019 News & Documentary Emmy Awards for Guns in America, in the Outstanding New Approaches: Current News category.

…

For Guns in America, TIME partnered with JR, the artist and photographer whose work includes powerful murals around the world that portray communities in all their complexity. In all, JR filmed and photographed 245 people—hunters and activists, teachers and police officers, parents and children—to create the mural that appeared on the cover of TIME’s November 5, 2018, issue. An interactive audio and visual experience of the mural appeared on Time.com. The mural is currently on view at the newly renovated Cody Firearms Museum at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

“Guns in America reflects TIME’s mission to bring together people from all points of view and deliver trusted, impactful journalism through innovative storytelling,” said Edward Felsenthal, CEO and editor in chief of TIME. “I want to thank JR for his amazing vision and his partnership.”

Here’s JR’s reaction upon learning about the nomination: 

They will find out on September 24th if they’ll be bestowed with the honors.

Why firearms? Excise taxes collected on firearms through the Pittman-Robertson Act help pay the majority of conservation funding that comes from hunters and anglers.

Gutowski has written for WFB since September 2014. What sparked his interest in firearms and subsequent interest in reporting on them? A 2009 visit to the range during a media internship. Though he grew up in Pennsylvania, it wasn’t until he moved to the Washington, D.C. area  Stephen’s interest in firearms took form. He noticed there was a serious deficit of gun beat reporters and made it his mission, given his newfound interest in the topic, to help bring fairness to the subject. Now, he’s on a mission to not only inform his readers on the latest news and legislation being considered but to ensure mainstream reporters get their firearms facts right.

Here’s what Stephen discussed:

]]> The portrayal of American gun culture by the media is, at best, biased and intentionally misleading.

Despite having the Second Amendment clearly enshrined in our Constitution and subsequent affirmation from Supreme Court cases like D.C. vs. Heller, many in the media insert their personal disdain for private ownership of firearms when covering the issue.

They lecture law-abiding Americans on what they should and shouldn’t own, despite having armed security guards of their own. Legal gun ownership is often conflated with criminal wrongdoing. Reporting is overwhelming negative and antagonistic towards law-abiding gun owners and hunters— often lumping them with mass shooters and serial killers, respectively. If someone uses their firearm safely and legally to deter criminals and would-be malcontents, it’s either dismissed or suppressed.

That, however, is changing.

One publication that is giving gun owners fair coverage is TIME Magazine, which just released its November 5th “Guns In America” cover and issue. It was a joint effort between the renowned media outlet and French artist JR, a past TIME 100 winner, who wanted to learn more about American gun culture and communicate it through art.

]]> I’m one of 12 “Guns in America” cover participants of the 245 total who are featured in this TIME piece in response to the Pittsburgh shooting and vandalism of the “Guns in America” cover mural in NYC. Here’s my full statement:

“All Americans grieve for those 11 Jewish congregants killed at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday. It’s an unspeakable tragedy—one that angers us all, including us gun owners and NRA members. Any and all violence perpetrated against any American is an attack on us all. What this evil individual and criminal did goes against humanity and ethics ascribed to firearms safety. Do not lump law-abiding gun owners with this anti-Semite, because we reject any and all criminals who murder innocent Americans.

As someone who is ethnically Jewish, I worry about the rise of anti-Semitism rearing its head again, as it has in the last decade. This isn’t a new thing. Anti-Semitism has been making a comeback since the 1990’s. This supersedes politics and should be perceived as that.

It is my hope that more American Jews, should they choose, consider more options to protect themselves—including firearms trainings in their localities if they are available.”
