District of Conservation: Demystifying suppressors with SilencerCo

“The suppressors, more of a muffler for gun silencers, [is] the correct term. Because Hiram Percy Maxim, the person who developed silencers he called it a silencer. His patent was specifically [the] word silencers. So that’s really where it’s derived from…So historically, that’s correct. But as far as you know, accuracy, it really is more of a suppressor. It muffles the sound of a gun. As a bullet travels through the barrel of a gun, it has a lot of hot gas and pressure, right. And then as it enters or exits the muzzle, it interacts with cold air. And so that cold air is what causes the muzzle blast, or the sound of a gunshot. So the suppressor gives it room to expand to dissipate. And then, of course, muffle the sound.” — Shauna Young, public relations specialist at SilencerCo

In Episode 212 of District of Conservation, Gabriella speaks with SilencerCo’s Matt Pinnell and Shauna Young.
