2019 #GivingTuesday Picks

Today marks the annual #GivingTuesday celebration. It follows Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. It’s aimed at encouraging private charity and support for worthy causes.

There are many causes deserving of your donor dollars. It was hard to winnow the field down but here are my 2019 picks:

#1 — American Freedom Fund

American Freedom Fund should definitely be on your radar. They host a variety of programs for veterans. Here’s more on the organization:

AFF empowers Active Duty, Reserve and Separated Service Members through a mission of athletics, education, and advocacy. The goal of AFF is simple: provide a place for active duty and Veteran service members to come together in a spirit of camaraderie to participate in recreational AND competitive sports; to afford the means and opportunity for student Veterans who seek a career in defense or public policy to achieve the next step in their goals; and to raise awareness and financial support for Veteran focused organizations that are providing crucial resources for Veterans in the community.

#2— Leadership Institute

Yes, I used to work for Leadership Institute—so I may be a tad biased in including them here. However, they just celebrated their 40th anniversary and are on the cutting edge of training and cultivating the next generation of conservative and libertarian grassroots activists.

At Leadership Institute’s 40th Anniversary celebration last night, founder Morton Blackwell also celebrated his 80th birthday and received a personalized letter from President Donald J. Trump thanking him for his contributions to the conservative movement.Who has taken a training, worked/interned there, donated to the organization, or hired LI-trained people? I took my first LI training — and first political training!—during my freshman year of college at UC-San Diego nine years ago. I then worked at LI from August 2012 until July 2016 as a Regional Field Coordinator and social media lecturer. Well over 217,000+ people from around the U.S. and the globe have benefitted from Morton and LI’s trainings. Congratulations on this amazing feat, Morton! Thanks for all you have done to train young people in America’s guiding principles. Happy Birthday! You can learn about LI at www.leadershipinstitute.org

#3— National Park Foundation

There is a nearly $13B backlog in the National Park Service. There are bills sitting in Congress waiting to be heard—the Restore Our Parks Act has over 300 co-sponsors in the House!—to help address this issue, but supporting NPS’ official charity, the National Park Foundation, can send a message too.

#4— National Shooting Sports Foundation

NSSF is the trade association for the firearms industry. They do tremendous work representing the industry, debunking mistruths about firearms ownership, and have initiatives like Project ChildSafe aimed at promoting true gun safety.

That reminds me: I need to renew my Media Membership…

#5— Raise Em Outdoors

Raise Em Outdoor is a nonprofit organization aimed at “helping kids from any background get outdoors, learn about hunting, fishing, bringing food to the table, and the outdoors as a lifestyle.”

It’s run by Erin Crooks out of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and is worthy of your consideration. [Bonus: I sit on the Board of Directors and volunteer my time as a fishing instructor when there are Virginia camps.]

#6— The DC Project

I’ve had the opportunity to get to know the ladies of The DC Project and I can vouch for their work in empowering women gun owners to get involved in the electoral process.

Here’s more about them:

The D.C. Project is 50 women, one from every state, meeting their legislators in Washington, D.C. as firearm owners and 2nd Amendment supporters. The 2nd Amendment should not be a partisan issue and our goal is to take every member of congress to the range and educate them on firearms safety, all the while giving them the opportunity to get to know us as good, upstanding, responsible citizens. Education is the key!
